Also known as Parador El Emperador, this superb medieval bastion dates from the 10th century and housed imperial Spain's founding Emperor Carlos V in the 16th century. Replete with suits of armor and other chivalric bric-a-brac, the place fees like a movie set (and has been used as one on several occasions). Many rooms have views of the Bidasoa River and estuary, rife with colorful fishing boats. Reserve ahead and ask for one of the three "special" rooms, with canopy beds and baronial appointments; they're worth the moderate extra expense. Pros: Great views, impeccably comfortable. Cons: Slightly chilly service, no restaurant.
