Fodor's Expert Review

The beautiful old city of Logroño is in the heart of one of the best wine regions in the world and whose location along the River Ebro—the border of Basque Country and La Rioja—creates a unique fusion of Basque and Spanish culture. Situated right in the heart of the old town, surrounded by all of the best historical sights as well as the food & wine-tasting frenzy of Calle de Laurel, is the boutique Hotel Marqués de Vallejo, a designer inn featuring its own art gallery, modern rooms, and a fantastic tapas restaurant.

Tip The hotel is located along the Camino de Santiago and is a warm retreat for pilgrims making the trek.

Room

Stylish rooms here are anything but old-fashioned, with cedar wood floors and trims, tasteful works of modern art adorning the walls, and quirky post-modern lighting. Standard rooms are too tight on space but they become much more airy in the upgraded options. The beds are very comfortable and all rooms are equipped with flatscreen TVs, AC, espresso machines, free Wi-Fi, and a minibar.

You Should Know Street noise can be an issue especially in the busier months of the summer.

Bathroom

Bespoke bathrooms feature enormous vanity mirrors, clean sharp lines, and relaxing rainforest showerheads.

Lobby

Hidden behind the classic 19th century façade of the hotel is an avant-garde oasis of art and style. Works of local artists line the walls of the foyer, which doubles as a gallery, and trendy furniture peppers the lounge area warmed by a long glass fireplace.

Dining

The hotel’s well-regarded restaurant, Gastro 1911, is housed in a sleek yet unostentatious setting and melds creative Rioja cuisine with international flair using and fresh seasonal ingredients from the surrounding region. Guests can enjoy set daily menus or order a la carte.

You Should Know The restaurant is closed on Sundays.

Drinking

Within Gastro 1911 is a lustrous bar whose highlight is its extensive menu of tantalizing wines from Rioja. The tapas on the menu are fun and flavorful and make for excellent pairings to the wine.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Logroño is accessible by bus or train from the major cities nearby. For visiting the bodegas in the surrounding wine country, a car or a private tour is best. Once here, the hotel is in an exceptional location for exploring Logroño by foot. It is just down the street from the Santa María de la Redonda Cathedral and the gorgeous Plaza del Mercado that it towers over. Make note, parking here can be a pain. We advise finding an offsite lot to park at ahead of time. The garage beneath the nearby Plaza del Espolón is a good option.

Restaurants

The hotel is located in ground zero for indulging in Logrño’s famous tapas and pintxo bars. On the busy Calle el Peso is Taberna del Tío Blas (3-minute walk), a Basque establishment with innovative pintxos. Restaurante Taberna Herrerías (4-minute walk) specializes in Rioja cuisine with an ever-changing menu to reflect the best local ingredients of the season and has an extensive wine selection.

Bars

Logroño is for wine lovers. Some of the best vineyards in the world surround the city and the breathtaking countryside, with its rolling hills and mountainous backdrop, makes for the perfect setting for a tasting. A few of the better bodegas nearby are Bodegas Campo Viejo (10-minute drive) and Bodega Ysios (20-minute drive). And for better or worse, the hotel is in the center of the city’s nightlife. There are endless places to taste great local wine or just to have a beer or cocktail. Calle del Laurel (1-minute walk) has nearly 60 bars packed into its few blocks alone and is the best street for a bar crawl.
