Fodor's Review

This ornate house with floral trim around the upper balconies, griffins over the door, and the pharmacist's insignia (the serpent and amphora symbolic of the curative properties of snake oils mixed in the apothecary vial) is the still-operating successor of Barceloneta's first pharmacy. It originally stood across the street; the present house was built in 1902. One of the sturdiest houses in Barceloneta, Farmacia Saim was used as a bomb shelter during the 1936–39 Spanish civil war, when Franco's bombers, in an attempt to paralyze the Barcelona port to slow down Republican resupply, frequently dumped misdirected bombs on Barceloneta.
