Fodor's Review

Founded in 1919 by Caesar Ritz, this is the original Ritz, the grande dame of Barcelona hotels, renamed in 2005. The imperial lobby piles on the glitz with marble, gilded columns, and a massive crystal chandelier. Guest rooms continue the white-glove treatment with Regency furniture and decorative fireplaces; some rooms have Roman-style mosaics in the baths. The restaurant, Caelis, serves first-rate French cuisine.

Am I not Ritzy enough?

I stayed 5 nights in Dec. 02. The room was lovely, with a beautiful view. But as I entered the hotel each day, most of the staff would look at me as if I did not belong...I thought I looked pretty smart and "neutral". Even the doorman would just stare at me as I entered, and no, he usually would not open the door for me. I got over it, and enjoyed my stay anyway. But next time, I'll stay in the Gothic Quarter.

Treat Yourself

We checked out of the Gran Catalonia Hotel and booked four nights at the Ritz for only 15 euros more per day. We shared a wonderful suite with our two kids (6,8) which was large enough for two extra beds, two bathrooms and a very big master bed with soft sheets and beautiful pillows. The service was prompt and friendly. Since we were on a budget, we did not eat at the three star french restaurant, but it looked very nice and formal. I would highly

recommend this hotel to anyone who wants luxury, comfort and style, even if it is a bit old world.

Being snooty doesn't get you anywhere...

Stayed at the Ritz in Barcelona in March 2002. It is a beautiful hotel, but the service was terrible. The desk manager at check in was terribly rude to us, and would not honor the reservation we pre-paid for -- it was for a specific type of room and he wouldn't give it to us. The hotel manager said he'd take care of us, and he did nothing. Also, some of the plumbing in our room didn't work. I'd stay elsewhere!

Not as Ritzy as it Could Be!

The room we had was large (junior suite) and recently decorated, but still seemed shabby somehow. The whole hotel felt like a few hundred thousand in addition to what was clearly an expensive recent renovation would have greatly improved first impressions. Willing, if not always highly professional staff, made it a friendly enough place, and the location and the buffet breakfasts deserve top ratings. We had a good rate, including breakfast, so

overall the value for money was good. Still, it didn't meet expectation as one of the city's top hotels.
