Surprisingly charming and intimate for such a sizable hotel, this slightly ramshackle Barcelona standby is directly across the plaza from the cathedral, so it overlooks weekend sardana dancing, the Thursday antiques markets, and, the cathedral itself. Rooms are comfortable and tasteful; try to get one with a view of the church. Considering its combination of comfort, style, and location, the Colon may be the best place to stay in Barcelona, though it's far from the most luxurious; it was a favorite of Catalan painter Joan Miró. Pros: Walking distance from all of central Barcelona, friendly staff. Cons: Low tech.
