This former publishing house -- and the city's first building to incorporate iron supports, built in 1880 -- has been handsomely converted to hold the work of preeminent contemporary Catalan painter Antoni Tàpies, as well as temporary exhibits. Tàpies is an abstract painter, although influenced by surrealism, which may account for the sculpture atop the structure -- a tangle of metal entitled Núvol i cadira (Cloud and Chair). The modern, airy split-level gallery also has a bookstore that's strong on Tàpies, Asian art, and Barcelona art and architecture.
