On the eastern side of the church of Santa Maria del Mar is a low marble monument with the inscription en el fossar de les moreres no s'hi enterra cap traidor, or "In the cemetery of the mulberry trees no traitor lies." It refers to the story of the graveyard keeper who refused to bury those who had fought on the invading side during War of the Spanish Succession, even when one of them turned out to be his son. The cemetery no longer exists; the monument honors the defenders of Barcelona who gave their lives in the siege that, on September 11, 1714, ended the war and established Felipe V on the Spanish throne. The torch-sculpture over the monument, often referred to as a pebetero (Bunsen burner), was erected in 2002.
