Map of Eixample

Barcelona's most famous neighborhood, this gracious late-19th-century urban development is known for its dizzying unnumbered grid and dazzling Art Nouveau architecture. The district encompasses an elegant checkerboard above Plaça de Catalunya and is called the Eixample, which means "widening" in Catalan. Somewhat wide and noisy for the most comfortable walking and wandering, the area, nevertheless, has so much superlative architecture that it's easy to spend considerable time exploring this virtual living Moderniste museum.
