Riotinto's landscape, scarred by centuries of intensive mining, can be viewed as part of a tour conducted by the Fundación Riotinto. The tour's first stop, the Museo Minero (Museum of Mining), has archaeological finds and a collection of historical steam engines and rail coaches. Next comes the Corta Atalaya, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world (4,000 feet across and 1,100 feet deep), and Bellavista, the elegant English quarter where the British mine managers lived. The tour ends with an optional ride on the Tren Minero (Miners' Train), which follows the course of the Riotinto along more than 24 restored km (15 mi) of the old mining railway. Opt for the full tour as described (offered the first Sunday of each month, October-May), or just visit individual sights.
