To find Baeza's university, follow the steps on the south side of the Plaza del Pópulo. The college opened in 1542, closed in 1824, and later became a high school, where Spain's greatest 20th-century poet, Antonio Machado, taught French from 1912 to 1919. The building now functions as a cultural center (a new school has been built next door). You can visit Machado's classroom—request the key—and the patio.
