Casa de Castril

Casa de Castril Review

Bernardo Zafra, secretary to Queen Isabella, once owned this richly decorated 16th-century palace. Notice the exquisite portal and the facade carvings depicting scallop shells and a phoenix. Inside is the Museo Arqueológico (Archaeological Museum), where you can find artifacts from provincial caves and from Moorish times, Phoenician burial urns from the coastal town of Almuñécar, and a copy of the Dama de Baza (Lady of Baza), a large Iberian sculpture discovered in northern Granada Province in 1971 (the original is in Madrid). At the time of this writing, the museum was closed for construction. Check with the tourist office for updates.
