The Northern Highlands and the Western Isles: Places to Explore

Thurso

The town of Thurso is quite substantial for a community so far north. In town are the Thurso Heritage Museum and Old St. Peter's Kirk, which dates back to the 12th century. There are also fine beaches, particularly at Dunnet Bay, and great seabird watching at Dunnet Head. With several restaurants and hotels, Thurso is one of the few towns that make a good starting point for exploring the far north. The town was the site of Britain's first nuclear-power plant, which is now in the process of being decommissioned.
