Fodor's Review

Beside Loch Assynt stand the ruins of Ardvreck Castle, a Clan MacLeod stronghold, built in the 15th century and finally seized in 1672 after a siege by the Mackenzies. Still highly atmospheric, it sits on an outcrop with perfect views the length of Loch Assynt in both directions. It can be reached from the car parking area on the A835 about 2 miles before the junction with the A837, then a muddy path to a stony beach leading to the castle.
