Fodor's Review

Thanks to its historic contents and war-torn past, Blair Castle is one of Scotland's most highly rated sights. The turreted white castle was home to successive dukes of Atholl and their families, the Murrays, until the death of the 10th duke. One of the castle's fascinating details is a preserved piece of floor still bearing marks of the red-hot shot fired through the roof during the 1745 Jacobite rebellion—the last occasion in Scottish history that a castle was besieged. The castle holds not only military artifacts—historically, the duke was allowed to keep a private army, the Atholl Highlanders—but also a rich collection of furniture, china, and paintings. The Hercules Gardens is a 9-acre Victorian walled garden, and the extensive grounds have woodland and river walks.
