The hand-painted wallpaper in the Chinese Bird Room dates from 1723, which shows how much the owners of this authentic castle care about preserving the past. Set in vast and beautiful grounds, the lodging has its own loch for those wanting to fish and hills for those who prefer walking. The bedrooms are furnished in 18th-century style, with en suite showers, some grander than others (the standard rooms are rather small). The restaurant is grand and baronial, while the
downstairs bar still has arrow slits in the windows of what were once the castle kitchens. Original paintings line the stone stairways. The restaurant offers a four-course prix-fixe menu (£32) of largely Scottish cuisine.
