Balquhidder Glen

A 20-minute drive from Callander, through the Pass of Leny and beyond Strathyre, is Balquhidder Glen (pronounced bal-kwidd-er), a typical Highland glen that runs westward. The glen has characteristics seen throughout the north: a flat-bottom U-shape profile, formed by prehistoric glaciers; extensive Forestry Commission plantings replacing much of the natural woodlands above; a sprinkling of farms; and, farther up the glen, hill roads bulldozed into the slopes to provide access for foresters. You may notice the boarded-up look of some of the area's houses, many of which are second homes for affluent residents of the south. The glen is also where Loch Voil and Loch Doune spread out, adding to the stunning vistas.
