Fodor's Review

A grand hotel in the best Victorian style, the Atholl Palace is a 19th-century vision of a medieval castle. Built in the 1870s, when the popularity of spas and water treatments was at its height, it stands on 50 acres with views of hills and valleys. Its fourth-floor suites, in the pointed towers, have circular sitting rooms with lovely views (though it is quite a climb to reach them). The bedrooms are bright and luxurious; most have grand curtained beds and reproduction antique furniture. Bathrooms are spacious and unique. The hotel also boasts a genuinely interesting basement museum (£3) that looks at the hotel's history. The elegant restaurant offers a prix-fixe and à la carte menu. There are gardens and woods to walk in, and a range of activities for guests who prefer not to lounge in the ample leather sofas in the lobby.
