Edenwater House

Off B6461, Ednam, The Scottish Borders, TD5 7QL, Scotland

This handsome stone house overlooking Edenwater, a trout stream that runs into the River Tweed, has three well-appointed guest rooms, which afford superb views of the river and two of the Cheviot hills. The inn's restaurant is filled with antiques and serves some of the best food in the Borders (but opens only three evenings a week). Roast saddle of hare with foie gras and fillet of monkfish crusted with basil and coriander in beurre blanc are two of the dishes you might find on the menu. It's open to nonguests Thursday through Saturday, when it offers a £40 three-course dinner.
