Cringletie House

Edinburgh Rd., off A703, Peebles, The Scottish Borders, EH45 8PL, Scotland

With medieval-style turrets and crow-step gables, this small-scale, peaceful retreat manages to be fancy and homey, Victorian (it was built in the 1860s) and modern (flat-screen TVs). A British-country-house style predominates. Some of the individually decorated bedrooms have fireplaces and four-posters, and all overlook the 28-acre grounds. From the drawing room there are views over the valley. A walled garden grows produce used in the excellent restaurant, which draws locals for Scottish fare. The afternoon tea, served in the conservatory, is especially recommended.
