Much of the romance of "Caledonia stern and wild"—the splendid and tranquil landscape, the Highland clans, red deer and golden eagles, Celtic mists and legends—is concentrated in this region. This is where you'll find Eilean Donan, the most romantic of Scottish castles; the land's end at John o'Groats; and Skye, the mysterious island immortalized by the exploits of Bonnie Prince Charlie. The old counties of Ross and Cromarty (sometimes called Easter and Wester Ross), Sutherland, and Caithness constitute the most northern portion of mainland Scotland. The population is sparse, mountains and moorland limit the choice of touring routes, and distances are less important than whether the winding, hilly roads you sometimes encounter are two lanes or one.
