The Great Glen is laced with rivers and lochs where you can fly-fish for salmon and trout. The fishing seasons are as follows: salmon, from early February through September or early October (depending on the area); brown trout, from March 15 to September 30; sea trout, from May through September or early October; rainbow trout, no statutory-close season. Sea angling from shore or boat is also possible. Tourist centers can provide information on locations, permits, and fishing rights.
The Scottish Highlands have some of the last remaining areas of true wilderness in Western Europe. You may spot a herd of red deer darting into the thick woods or a red grouse stealthily guarding its territory on the heather-rich moors. Look out for inquisitive seals in and around the seaside lochs. You'll spot them in the water, snouts aloft as they sniff out any potential food nearby. If you're lucky you'll catch a glimpse of the rare golden eagle, which roams more remote territories.
