The best place to see the locks of the Caledonian Canal in action is at Fort Augustus, at the southern tip of Loch Ness. In the village center considerable canal activity takes place at a series of locks that rise from Loch Ness. Fort Augustus itself was captured by the Jacobite clans during the 1745 Rebellion. Later the fort was rebuilt as a Benedictine abbey, but the monks no longer live here. The Caledonian Canal Heritage Centre (Ardchattan House, Canalside, Fort Augustus. 01320/366493), in a converted lockkeeper's cottage, gives the history of the canal and its uses over the years.
