If you come to Glasgow from England and the south of Scotland, you'll probably approach the city from the M6, M74, and A74. The city center is clearly marked from these roads. From Edinburgh the M8 leads to the city center and is the route that cuts straight across the city center and into which all other roads feed. From the north either the A82 from Fort William or the A/M80 from Stirling also feed into the M8 in the Glasgow city center. From then on you only have to know your exit: Exit 16 serves the northern part of the city center, Exit 17/18 leads to the northwest and Great Western Road, and Exit 18/19 takes you to the hotels of Sauchiehall Street, and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

You don't need a car in the city center, and you're probably better off without one; though most modern hotels have their own lots, parking here can be trying. More convenient are the park-and-ride operations at underground stations (Kelvinbridge, Bridge Street, and Shields Road), which will bring you into the city center in a few minutes. The West End museums and galleries have their own lots, as does the Burrell. Parking wardens are constantly on patrol, and fines cost upward of £26 for parking illegally. Multistory garages are open 24 hours a day at the following locations: Anderston Centre, George Street, Waterloo Place, Mitchell Street, Cambridge Street, and Concert Square. Rates run between £1 and £2 per hour.
