Golf

Several municipal courses are operated within Glasgow proper by the local authorities. Bookings are relatively inexpensive and should be made directly to the course 24 hours in advance to ensure prime tee times (courses open at 7 am). A comprehensive list of contacts, facilities, and greens fees of the 30 or so other courses near the city is available from the tourist board.

Douglas Park Golf Club. A charming parkland course at Milngavie, on the western outskirts of Glasgow, this attractive and varied course is set among lush rhododendron bushes and birch and pine trees. Each hole is highly individual, and though shorter than many courses it tests the careful, accurate golfer rather than the big swing. The Campsie Fells form a pleasant backdrop. Milngavie Rd., Hillfoot, Bearsden, East Dunbartonshire, G61 2TJ. 0141/942–0985; www.douglasparkgolfclub.co.uk. Apr.–Oct., £44 weekdays, £55 weekends; Nov.–Mar., £15 weekdays, £20 weekends.

Carrick at Loch Lomond. Located on the banks of legendary Loch Lomond, this imaginatively designed course pays homage to the surrounding landscapes. Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, G83 8QZ. 0141/276–0810; www.glasgowlife.org.uk. £50–£80 .
