Fodor's Expert Review David Livingstone Centre

Blantyre

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

Set among gardens above the riverbank, the David Livingstone Centre is based partly in the tiny one-room tenement apartment where the explorer-missionary (1813–73) spent his first 23 years. The rest of the museum is devoted to his travels across Africa, depicted in small, framed tableaux that light up as you walk past them. His meeting with Henry Stanley, sent by the New York Times to find him and bring him back, is commemorated. On meeting him, Stanley famously said, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume." Livingstone refused the invitation and died in Africa. Copies of Livingstone's letters are displayed, and there is plenty of opportunity for youngsters to interact with the exhibits.
