Provand's Lordship Review

Glasgow's oldest house was built in 1471 by Bishop Andrew Muirhead as a residence for churchmen. Mary, Queen of Scots (1542-87) is said to have stayed here. After her day, however, the house fell into decline and was used as a sweetshop, a soft-drink factory, the home of the city hangman, and a junk shop. The city finally rescued it and turned it into a museum. Exhibits show the house as it might have looked in its heyday, with period rooms and a spooky re-creation of the old hangman's room. The St. Nicholas Garden behind the house is a medicinal herb garden, with the famous Tontine carved stone faces.
