Jubilee Course. This windswept course offers quite a challenge even for experienced golfers. When it opened in 1897 was intended for beginners, but the popularity of its seaside location encouraged the powers that be to convert it into a championship course. Many golfers say the 15th hole is one of the best in the sport. West Sands Rd., St. Andrews, KY16 9XL. www.standrews.org.uk. Green fee: £35–£70. 18 holes, 6742 yds, par 72.

New Course. Not exactly new—it opened in 1895—the New Course is rather overshadowed by the Old Course, but it has a firm following of golfers who appreciate the loop design. West Sands Rd., St. Andrews, KY16 9XL. www.standrews.org.uk. Green fee: £35–£70. 18 holes, 6,625 yds, par 71.

Old Course. Believed to be the oldest golf course in the world, the Old Course was first played in the 15th century. Each year, more than 44,000 rounds are teed off, and no doubt most get stuck in one of its 112 bunkers. A handicap certificate is required. West Sands Rd., St. Andrews, KY16 9XL. www.standrews.org.uk. Green fee: £75–£155. 18 holes, 6721 yds, par 72.

Strathtyrum Course. Those with a high handicap will enjoy this course, opened in 1993, without the worry or embarrassment of holding up more experienced golfers. West Sands Rd., A91, St. Andrews, KY16 9XL. www.standrews.org.uk. £12-25 per round. 18 holes, 5,620 yds, par 69.
