Several excellent city maps are available at bookstores. Particularly recommended is the Bartholomew Edinburgh Plan, with a scale of approximately 4 inches to 1 mi, by the long-established Edinburgh cartographic company John Bartholomew and Sons, Ltd.

The Edinburgh and Scotland Information Centre, adjacent to Waverley Station (follow the tic" signs in the station and throughout the city), offers an accommodations service (Book-A-Bed-Ahead) in addition to the more typical services. It's open May through June and September, from Monday to Saturday 9 to 7, Sunday 10 to 5; July and August, from Monday to Saturday 9 to 8, Sunday 10 to 8; October and April, from Monday to Saturday 9 to 6, Sunday 10 to 5; November through March, from Monday to Wednesday 9 to 5, from Thursday to Saturday 9 to 6, Sunday 10 to 5.

Complete information is also available at the information desk at the Edinburgh Airport.

The List, a publication available from city-center bookstores and newsstands, and the Day by Day Guide and Events 2006, from the Edinburgh and Scotland Information Centre, list information about all types of events, from movies and theater to sports. The Herald and Scotsman newspapers are good for reviews and notices of upcoming events throughout Scotland.
