$-$$, Vegetarian, New Town
Fodor's Review:
This was Edinburgh's original vegetarian restaurant long before it was fashionable to serve healthful, meatless creations. The salad bar has more than a dozen different salads each day; a massive plateful costs less than £5. Tasty hot options include Moroccan stew with couscous and moussaka. Live mellow music plays six nights a week (seven during the festival). Around the corner on Thistle Street is the Bistro, from the same proprietors; it serves snacks, meals, and decadent desserts such as chocolate fondue. There's also an impressive organic wine list.
