Once a seamen's hostel, the Malmaison, in the heart of Leith, now has stylish digs 10 minutes by bus from the city center. A dramatic black, cream, and taupe color scheme prevails in the public areas. King-size beds, CD players, and satellite TV are standard in the bedrooms, which are decorated in a bold, modern style. The French theme of the hotel, part of a small, chic British chain, is emphasized in the Café Bar and Brasserie, which serves food all day. Service may be a bit erratic.
