This hotel in the elegant West End carries out a successful, sophisticated flirtation with modernity that makes it stand out from its neighbors. Bold colors and contemporary Scottish art set off its late-19th-century features and classic furniture. The good-size rooms are typical of an Edinburgh town house but offer peace and quiet without the noise often associated with this type of hotel. The chic, unadorned restaurant has oversize mirrors and a central catwalk of light; its focus is on beautifully presented contemporary cuisine. Service at the hotel is thorough, yet unobtrusive.
