Why We Like It
The name could be more inventive, we agree. But the gorgeous wooden detailings and historic feel of the public areas in this hotel-style B&B give it character, and it's a good deal at the price.
Fodor's Expert Review
Standing out along an elegant and tranquil West End terrace, this imposing Victorian mansion combines grand public spaces with affordable modern accommodation. The house boasts an elegant entrance, hallway, and handsome original features—including lots of wonderful, intricately carved wood. The building has a beautiful double-height library and a lounge bar crammed with interesting artworks and antiques, as well as views down to the Water of Leith from the large breakfast room.
Tip The house was built by businessman and philanthropist John Ritchie Findlay, who established The Scotsman newspaper, and designed by architect Sydney Mitchell. The pair also worked together on social housing project Well Court in Dean Village, which can be seen from the house.

Room
Bedrooms cater to couples and different-size groups: family rooms are of ample size. Expect muted, slightly uninspiring, contemporary decor: gray walls, large artwork headboards and comfy beds.
You Should Know The lift is very small and a little slow - there are stairs.
Bathroom
Bathrooms are quite plain but functional, with white brick tiles and B+B's own brand toiletries.
Lobby
The lobby is amazing - wooden panels and a carved ceiling and huge doors. Staff are friendly. Ring the buzzer if the door is locked.
Dining
The hotel breakfast is ample and served in the gorgeous 200-year old breakfast room, complete with views of the city below. You can add haggis to your breakfast if you're feeling brave.
Drinking
The bar is petite, but grown-up and pleasant, with gray walls and a host of whiskies - although staff are happy to give beginners some recommendations!

Getting Around
The B&B is a little off the beaten track but still only around ten minutes' walk to the West End proper. The Royal Mile is also only about 15 minutes' walk.
Restaurants
The Scran and Scallie (9-minute walk) is a great modern Scottish gastropub. Or The Stockbridge (4-minute walk) offers seasonal Scottish fine dining.
Bars
Kays Bar (5-minute walk) is a friendly Victorian pub that was once a coach house. Tigerlily (8-minute walk) is a funky bar with food and a cool vibe, including a huge living wall.
