Duart Castle Review

The 13th-century Duart Castle, ancient seat of the Macleans, was ruined by the Campbells in 1691 but purchased and restored by Sir Fitzroy Maclean in 1911. It stands dramatically on a cliff top overlooking the Sound of Mull. Inside, one display depicts the wreck of the Swan, a Cromwellian vessel sunk offshore in 1653 and excavated in the 1990s by marine archaeologists. Outside you can visit nearby Millennium Wood, planted with groups of Mull's indigenous trees. To reach Duart by car, take the A849 and turn left around the shore of Duart Bay. For buses to the castle from Craignure, call the castle in advance. From Craignure ferry port, there is a direct bus (10 mins) to the castle.
