Yeliseyevsky Food Emporium Review

Yeliseyevsky Food Emporium . Officially called Gastronome No. 1 under the Communists, this famous store directly across the street from the Catherine Monument is known once again by its original name. Built at the turn of the 20th century for the immensely successful grocer Yeliseyev, the store is decorated in the style of early art nouveau. The interior, with its colorful stained-glass windows, gilded ceilings, and brass chandeliers, is worth a look. Before the revolution Yeliseyevsky specialized in imported delicacies, and after several lean decades, goods again overflow its shelves—this is a particularly good place to find wines and spirits from all over the former Soviet Union.
