Headquarters of the Guard Corps . This modest structure serves as an architectural buffer between the neoclassical General Staff Building to the left of it and the baroque Winter Palace. Designed by the architect Alexander Bryullov and built between 1837 and 1843, the building is noteworthy for the very fact that it easily goes unnoticed. Instead of drawing attention to itself, it leads the eye to the other architectural masterpieces bordering Palace Square. The restraint shown in Bryullov's creation was considered the ultimate architectural tribute to the masters who came before him.
