With its name, this restaurant recalls Russia's best year in history. Low-key, comfortable elegance combines with affordable prices, a giant menu, and giant portions. It's a fine alternative to the stuffier, more touristy dining options, and it's convenient to the Mariinsky Theater. The menu's traditional Russian cuisine emphasizes game and fish, plus there are European dishes. Try the mushroom soup or borscht for a starter, followed by sturgeon or salmon.

We were just in St. Pete's for my birthday and I wanted something special. Unfortunately we had eaten at Restoran the first night and I was afraid we would not find anything as good but 1913 did the trick. I started with the red caviar blini's and then the Sturgeon. It was all done to perfection. My partner went the traditional route with the potatoe pancakes to start and then the Siberian meat stuffed dumplings. The presentation was outstanding. When there was a bit of confusion on the language another waitress was called over to help. And they was even lovely music from a guitar, violin and singer. One of the best birthday meals I have ever had.
