Alexander Pushkin Drama Theater ( Alexandrinskyi Teatr) Review

Alexander Pushkin Drama Theater ] [rusT][rust].The most imposing building on Ploshchad Ostrovskovo (also referred to as Alexandrinskaya Ploshchad) is this theater built in classical style between 1828 and 1832. Six Corinthian columns adorn the Nevsky facade. Apollo's chariot dominates the building, with statues of the muses Terpischore and Melpomene to keep him company. In the small garden in front of the theater stands the Catherine Monument, which shows the empress towering above the principal personalities of her famous reign. Depicted on the pedestal are Grigory Potemkin, Generalissimo Alexander Suvorov, the poet Gavril Derzhavin, and others. Among the bronze figures is Princess Dashkova, who conspired against her own sister's lover—who just happened to be Catherine's husband, Peter III—to help the empress assume the throne.
