It's hard to miss this Soviet monolith in the city center. Directly opposite the Moscow Station, the Oktyabrskaya hits you right between the eyes with its huge sign, leningrad-gorod geroi" (Leningrad-Hero City), set on top. The location, near Nevsky prospekt, is great. The hotel opened in 1851 in conjunction with Russia's first railroad between then capital of St. Petersburg and Moscow. In those times it was known as one of the city's best hotels. The hotel no longer has that reputation but has undergone extensive renovations and has added dark-wood furniture and cream accents in the rooms. There's an annex across the street and breakfast is included in the room rate.
