When to Go to St. Petersburg

The climate in Russia changes dramatically with the seasons. St. Petersburg is best visited in late spring or early autumn, just before and after the peak tourist season. The weather is always unpredictable, but you are most apt to encounter pleasantly warm and sunny days in late May and late August. In St. Petersburg it rarely gets very hot, even at the height of summer. If this maritime city is your only destination, try to visit St. Petersburg during the White Nights (June to early July), when the northern day is virtually endless.

In winter, St. Petersburg is covered in snow, but only the hardiest tourists should visit between late November and early February, when the days are short and dark—extremely so in St. Petersburg—and the weather is often bitterly cold.
