The landmark building of this world-renowned theater is closed for restoration until late 2011. Until then, performances are held either on a second stage next to the main theater, or at the Kremlin State Palace. The quality of the Bolshoi's productions has been uneven at times, but recent guest foreign directors have made for more innovative shows. The Russian flair for set and costume design alone can often be enough to keep an audience enthralled. Performances sell out quickly, so order tickets far in advance.
