By visiting Olhão’s riverfront Mercado dos Pescadores or attending its famous August shellfish festival, you’ll see why this town is synonymous with fish. Modern construction has destroyed much of its charm, so Olhão may not be as attractive or touristy as some other towns; however, its fishing port (the Algarve’s largest) is still colorful, and its intricate Cidade Velha is appealing. Olhão is also home to the only Algarvian football team in the Portuguese top division, the Primeira Liga.
