Lawrence's Hotel

Rua Consiglieri Pedroso 38–40, Sintra, Lisbon, 2710-550, Portugal

When this 18th-century inn, the oldest on the peninsula, reopened in 1999, the U.S. secretary of state and the Netherlands' Queen Beatrix were among the first guests. It's easy to see the appeal. The intimate rooms—with wood and terra-cotta predominating—are bathed in light from French windows, and deluxe touches abound. Staff can arrange anything from jeep tours to babysitting. The ambience channels British high society from centuries past, right down to the five-o'clock tea with scones and jam. In the old-world restaurant ($$$; reservations recommended) specialties such as roast beef with red pepper sauce are served on Portugal's Vista Alegre porcelain.
