Porto is three hours north of Lisbon by highway or express train, so even a short trip to Portugal can include a night or two here. From Porto, it's only another two hours through the Minho coastline up to the Spanish border, or another three to four hours east to the less visited Trás-os-Montes and the eastern border with Spain.
It takes only a day or two to experience the more urban pleasures of Porto and its wine lodges and the nearby coastal resorts. Several more days allow a visit to the history-rich towns of Braga or Guimarães or a trip through the lovely Douro Valley. A full week allows you to cover all of this and the peaceful inland towns and villages along the rivers Lima and Minho, or you could set off for the remote northeastern Trás-os-Montes and its fascinating towns of Bragança and Chaves.
