This impressive structure sprawls along the north bank of the Rio Ave, the river that flows through Vila do Conde. Dom Afonso Sanches and his wife, Dona Teresa Martins, established the convent in the 14th century, and it retains its original cloister and the beautiful tombs of its founders.
