Fodor's Review

Held every Thursday in the central Campo da República, the Barcelos Market is one of the country's largest and arguably its most famous. It starts early in the morning when the mist is still rising off the ground. Vendors cry out their wares, which include almost anything you can think of: traditional Barcelos ceramics (brown pottery with yellow-and-white decoration), workaday earthenware, baskets, rugs, glazed figurines (including the famous Barcelos cock), decorative

copper lanterns, and wooden toys. There are also mounds of vegetables, fruits, cheese, fresh bread and cakes, clothes, shoes, leather, and kitchen equipment. In fall and winter, the scent of roasting chestnuts wafts across the square, promising a snack to tide you over as you browse.
