Hotel da Oliveira Review

Town houses that date from the 16th and 17th centuries were remodeled to create this stylish hotel in the historic city center. Formerly a government-run pousada, the property reopened in summer 2013 as a swanky, modern hotel with historic touches. Each room has a different theme related to Guimarães history and is adorned with old maps and art—as well as flat-screen TVs. The reception desk is built from stacks of antique books salvaged from an adjacent library. Service is courteous and efficient, and guest rooms are amazingly silent, with double-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a busy square with nightlife. There's a family games room, while outdoor activities such as golf, shooting, and horse riding can be arranged. The excellent restaurant, Hool, serves up Portuguese traditional cuisine, paired with a superb wine list.
