Fodor's Expert Review Panorama
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Housed in the market hall in Melgaço, upriver from Monção, this restaurant is renowned for the wonderful views through its picture windows and for its starters, of which there are dozens. Among the best are pataniscas de lampreia (lamprey fritters), iscas de porco preto (liver from acorn-fed black pigs), ovas (fish roe in vinaigrette) and bola de carne (meat roll). Main dishes range from arroz de tamboril (monkfish rice) to perdiz estufada (stewed partridge), while the comprehensive wine list is particularly strong on reds. Finish with creamy queijo da serra cheese served with homemade compote. The place packs out on weekends, when it's best to book ahead.
