Pousada de Guimarães, Santa Marinha Review

This pousada is in a 12th-century monastery that was founded by the wife of Dom Afonso Henriques to honor the patron saint of pregnant women. Antiques and extraordinary azulejo panels fill the public areas, and some guest rooms used to be monks' cells. These are complemented by a prize-winning modern wing. The stone dining room serves regional dishes; the rojões á Minhota (pork simmered and served with pickled vegetables) is delicious; sop up the sauce with broa (corn bread). A fitting dessert is toucinho do céu: literally "bacon from heaven" but actually an egg-and-almond pudding. There's a children's playground and games room and a range of outdoor activities.
