Peso da Régua

This is the true heart of port wine country, and all the bottles from the vineyards of the Upper Douro Valley pass through on their way to Porto. Local wine lodges offer tours of their cellars, which make a nice contrast to the large-scale operations in Vila Nova de Gaia. The Museu do Douro provides a showcase for the wine-making industry. Many boat tours from Porto end in Régua (the town’s shortened name); others pause here before continuing upriver to Pinhão, whose train station is lined with beautiful tile panels.
