Barcelos

Barcelos, a bustling market town on the banks of the Rio Cávado with a population of some 18,000, is the center of a flourishing handicrafts industry, particularly ceramics (above all in the form of the famous Barcelos cockerel) and wooden toys and models. It's worth coming here if you plan to carry home a host of souvenirs, so if you're traveling the region by public transport, you might make the town your last stop. The best time to visit is during the famous weekly market—Barcelos is an easy day trip from Braga or Viana do Castelo, and there's not so much to do or see on other days, although the Pottery Museum is always worth visiting.
